When reviewing a statement, ignore the marketing fluff and look directly at the FEES section.

EXAMPLE 1 (TIERED TRAP)

QUAL DISC: 1.5% - $75.00
MQUAL SURCHG: 1.0% - $25.00
NQUAL SURCHG: 2.0% - $50.00
*Analysis: They are effectively paying 3.5% on their Non-Qual cards. Easy target.*

EXAMPLE 2 (FLAT RATE - SQUARE)
Total Volume: $10,000 (Avg Ticket $10)
Transaction count: 1000
Rate: 2.6% ($260) + $0.10 per trans ($100) = $360 Total Fees.
Effective Rate: 3.6%.
*Analysis: Because the ticket size is small ($10), the 10-cent fee is murdering them. Move them to Interchange Plus.*

EXAMPLE 3 (PADDED ASSESSMENTS)
Visa Assessment Fee: 0.18%
*Analysis: Visa charges ~0.14%. The ISO is padding the wholesale cost by 4 basis points and hiding it in the assessments.*
